My name is Nick Roskruge and I am the Kai-Arahi Maori for the College of Sciences at Massey University. My background is in horticultural technology and I lecture in both horticulture management and Treaty of Waitangi issues in degree programmes in the College. Having completed a BHort (Hons) degree and postgraduate study I am now completing a PhD in soil science with the university.

Kai-Arahi Maori

Ka nui te mihi i tenei tau

The Kai-Arahi Maori (Maori Advisor) is a new initiative in the College of Sciences which focuses on the promotion of Maori initiatives relevant to the college and Maori in the science community. The focus of this position is in four key areas:

  • Provision of the Kaitautoko Maori service
  • Management of the scholarship programmes
  • Provision of advice to the college on Maori issues and policy areas
  • Initiation of, and ongoing management of, interaction with external Maori groups and the College of Sciences, especially relating to research projects and ongoing relationships

Some of the relationships already established include:

  • Te Ohu Kai Moana (Waitangi Fisheries Commission) - scholarships
  • Poutama Trust - scholarships
  • Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research - scholarships and postgraduate opportunities
  • NAMMSAT - National Association of Maori Mathematicians, Scientists & Technologists - Maori science network
  • FoRST (Foundation for Research, Science & Technology) - scholarships and research opportunities
  • Iwi/hapu/marae groups for specific research projects
  • Waiariki Polytechnic, Rotorua - Applied Science options

NAMMSAT (National Association of Maori Mathematicians, Scientists & Technologists)
'Maakoi pounamu, tini putanga kee'

NAMMSAT is a collective of Maori who support increased participation and achievement by Maori in the fields of mathematics, science, technology and engineering. The organisation was established in 1994, with the majority of members themselves being Maori who specialized in these fields. Successful past achievements include national conferences, science camps and a network of Maori practitioners within all fields of research science and technology.
