Tuapapa Putaiao Maori Fellowships

The Tuapapa Putaiao Maori Fellowships are funded by the Ministry of research, Science and technology and the Ministry of Economic development.

The Tuapapa Putaiao Maori Fellowships aim to:

  • Assist Maori to gain scientific qualifications in order to pursue a research career in science, technology, or engineering.
  • Develop or assist in the development of skills relating to research, science, and technology among Maori, especially young Maori, by providing opportunities for talented graduates to study for higher degrees.
  • develop positive role models in order to promote the participation and achievement of Maori in New Zealand science, technology and engineering, at school and under-graduate level.


Emphasis will be placed on areas of science, engineering, or technology where participation by Maori, as evidenced by numbers of Maori graduates, is particularly low. Fellowships are offered for post-graduate degrees in science, engineering and technology disciplines, but exclude Social Sciences, Humanities, and Medical and Health Sciences.

These exclusions are defined as:

  • Social Science and Humanities means study and/or research of human society, the cultures, history, languages and beliefs which have shaped them, and the nature of social relationships, organisations and institutions.
  • Medical and Health Sciences means study and/or research that has or may have relevance to human health, and include biomedical, clinical, public health, and health services research.


Projects completed by Tuapapa Putaiao Fellows:

Hormonal stimulation of ovarian function in the Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) using gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH).(1999-present)

Research aimed at developing a hormone treatment to stimulate the normal pattern of growth of the ovary thereby stimulating ovulation and egg laying in birds. Project has relevance to the 'Kokako" project and other related native bird programmes.


Survey of Fatty Acid Compositions in Native New Zealand Plant Seed Oils

High percentages of New Zealand's native plant species grow only in New Zealand and/or originateKaitautoko Maori from New Zealand. This provides a high potential for plant compounds that are unique to New Zealand species. The aim of this research project was to survey the fatty acid content of seed oils from these native plants.

It was found that while most contain the fatty acids common to all plant seed oils, many seed oils including those from Totara, Kahikatea, Miro, NZ Flax, Ti Kouka, Kohia have unusually high percentages of certain fatty acids uncommon to plant seed oils and/or high percentages of fatty acids currently used in edible and non-edible industries. With further investigation, New Zealand's own native species may contain valuable economic or commercial benefits. Studies such as this also helps maintain the importance of retaining Aotearoa's natural and native resources.
